Robert Frank

Robert Frank, London.  1952-53

Been taking a long look at Robert Frank’s Life and work.  Here are some relevant links.  I used a pre-”The Americans” picture above, because the guy has done some interesting stuff that doesn’t get seen as much.

The Americans: The Book that Changed Photography” A great overview and look at how Frank worked.

Robert Franks Unsentimental Journey – Very intimate and personal look at Robert Frank

Hoover Dam – A shot that didn’t make the book.

Robert Frank: Melancholy and Menace – I’m not convinced by the conclusions the author makes, but great info about Frank’s arrest while shooting for “The Americans.”

Robert Frank’s “The Americans” – A slide show essay.  Worth a look.

Robert Frank Coloring Book – Fascinating discussion of the cohesive whole of Frank’s “The Americans,” the the structural importance of the photographs order.

Robert Frank – An essay by Walker Evans introducing the pictures that would become “The Americans,” for U.S. Camera in 1958.  A crappy article, I include it only to illustrate why Frank threw out the intro Evans wrote for “The Americans” and went with Jack Kerouac’s instead.  Reads like a textbook.  Boring.

Robert Frank:  Dissecting the American Image. – by the same guy as did the coloring book – really interesting stuff about the nature of the work itself.

Robert Frank’s “The Americans” Still Shocks – Worth reading for the Robert Frank quote in the final paragraph.

Robert Frank:  Beauty and the Beats – Good anecdote, then discussion of the effect the “Family of Man” exhibition had on Frank.

Robert Frank:  Gunslinger with a camera

4Am Make Love to Me – A post Americans sample of Robert Franks photography.

Cocksucker Blues – One of Robert Frank’s post “The Americans” movies
